CHAPTER SEVEN
Aunt Sally looks at me as though Iâve lost my mind. Weâre sitting at her kitchen table, and Iâve caught her up on the events of the last forty-eight hours.
âJade, do you hear yourself? I donât know who you saw, but it couldnât have been your father.â Her voice is gentle but firm.
âIâm not crazy. It was him. He was watching me from the sidewalk. If it hadnât been for the police and ambulance lights, I never wouldâve seen him. He had the same build, the same kind of clothesâand get this, the same scar above his eyebrow. Think about itâhe was badly burned. You could only identify his body because of his ring. How do we know the man we buried was Dad?â
âBecause I saw the body. Yes, he was badly burned, but I know my own brother. Besides, who else would it be? It was a terrible, terrible accident, and even though you shouldnât, I know you still blame yourself. Maybe this is your subconsciousâs way of alleviating that guilt. Making yourself believe heâs really alive.â
I shake my head. âItâs been ten years, Aunt Sally. If I was going to delude myself, donât you think I wouldâve already done so? I know what I saw. It was him. Maybe someone else was driving and he got out. Isnât it possible that you made a mistake identifying his body? He was burned. What if heâs alive and he has amnesia? He could be living a whole life, not remembering who he is. That could be why he came to New York. A random memory. Iâve requested a copy of the autopsy report from the medical examinerâs office. As soon as they email me that itâs ready, Iâm going to Farmington to pick it up.â
Aunt Sally blows out a breath. âJade, this is not healthy. Why would you want to dredge up all those details? Are you sure you can handle reading that report? Iâm concerned that you might go back into a depression again.â
I scoff. Like Iâve ever been out of my depression. She has no idea that I was a few hours away from ending my life before I saw my father on that sidewalk. Thereâs no way Iâm telling her how close Iâd been to ending it all, or else sheâll try to have me committed again. For a split second my belief wavers, and I worry that maybe I did imagine it. But no, Iâm not delusional. It was him. I square my shoulders and look her in the eyes. âI promise, Iâm not going off the deep end. I know what I saw.â
âHoney, youâve been through so much these past few weeks. First the breakup with Benedict, and now this. Our minds can play tricks on us when weâre stressed out.â
âIt was him! I told you about the scar.â
âAgain, your mind could have filled in those blanks.â
Arguing is pointless. I need proof. âSiennaâs roommate works for a private detective, and sheâs put me in touch with him.
