CHAPTER SEVEN

Aunt Sally looks at me as though I’ve lost my mind. We’re sitting at her kitchen table, and I’ve caught her up on the events of the last forty-eight hours.

“Jade, do you hear yourself? I don’t know who you saw, but it couldn’t have been your father.” Her voice is gentle but firm.

“I’m not crazy. It was him. He was watching me from the sidewalk. If it hadn’t been for the police and ambulance lights, I never would’ve seen him. He had the same build, the same kind of clothes—and get this, the same scar above his eyebrow. Think about it—he was badly burned. You could only identify his body because of his ring. How do we know the man we buried was Dad?”

“Because I saw the body. Yes, he was badly burned, but I know my own brother. Besides, who else would it be? It was a terrible, terrible accident, and even though you shouldn’t, I know you still blame yourself. Maybe this is your subconscious’s way of alleviating that guilt. Making yourself believe he’s really alive.”

I shake my head. “It’s been ten years, Aunt Sally. If I was going to delude myself, don’t you think I would’ve already done so? I know what I saw. It was him. Maybe someone else was driving and he got out. Isn’t it possible that you made a mistake identifying his body? He was burned. What if he’s alive and he has amnesia? He could be living a whole life, not remembering who he is. That could be why he came to New York. A random memory. I’ve requested a copy of the autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office. As soon as they email me that it’s ready, I’m going to Farmington to pick it up.”

Aunt Sally blows out a breath. “Jade, this is not healthy. Why would you want to dredge up all those details? Are you sure you can handle reading that report? I’m concerned that you might go back into a depression again.”

I scoff. Like I’ve ever been out of my depression. She has no idea that I was a few hours away from ending my life before I saw my father on that sidewalk. There’s no way I’m telling her how close I’d been to ending it all, or else she’ll try to have me committed again. For a split second my belief wavers, and I worry that maybe I did imagine it. But no, I’m not delusional. It was him. I square my shoulders and look her in the eyes. “I promise, I’m not going off the deep end. I know what I saw.”

“Honey, you’ve been through so much these past few weeks. First the breakup with Benedict, and now this. Our minds can play tricks on us when we’re stressed out.”

“It was him! I told you about the scar.”

“Again, your mind could have filled in those blanks.”

Arguing is pointless. I need proof. “Sienna’s roommate works for a private detective, and she’s put me in touch with him.
